A MoonSwatch Worth Its Weight in… History!

Mission to the Moon 1969: Swatch’s Golden Tribute

Gold takes center stage in a limited‑edition MoonSwatch celebrating the Apollo 11 moon landing of July 21, 1969. Some moments are so extraordinary they continue to shine across generations, and Swatch’s Mission to the Moon 1969 captures that radiance in a commemorative timepiece.

This edition is limited to 1,969 pieces, each featuring a dial, hands, crown, and pushers crafted from OMEGA’s 18K Moonshine™ Gold — all weighing precisely 11 grams, a playful nod to Apollo 11. The gold itself dates from that era, melted from old OMEGA spare parts in the brand’s own foundry.

In 1969, eleven grams of 18K gold cost $11, or around 48 Swiss francs. True to that moment, Mission to the Moon 1969 is priced at CHF 500, based on the gold’s value on July 21, 1969 rather than today’s market.

To purchase, enthusiasts must complete an Electronic Swatch Timepiece Application (ESTA) — a digital process echoing travel authorizations. Only 1,969 approvals will be granted, giving selected applicants the right to buy the watch. Applications open July 16 at 15:32 CEST and close July 21 at 23:59 CEST.

Design Details:

  • Dial: Vertical satin finishing, OMEGA X Swatch logos, recessed counters, gold beveled indexes with black lacquer.

  • Case: Matte black Bioceramic, 42 mm diameter, 13.25 mm thickness, crown and pushers in Moonshine™ Gold.

  • Bezel: Black Bioceramic with gold‑colored tachymeter scale.

  • Strap: Black rubber with VELCRO® closure, gold lining with moon‑inspired texture.

  • Movement: Quartz chronograph, water‑resistant to 3 bar.

Two subtle highlights elevate the tribute: a golden Moon battery cover engraved with the landing date and footprint, and individual numbering engraved at 9 o’clock, finished with golden lacquer.

“The use of gold and its weight are more than aesthetic details — they are playful nods to Apollo 11.”

This MoonSwatch is more than a watch. It is a time capsule, melting gold from the past into a design that honors humanity’s first steps on the Moon. Limited to 1,969 pieces, it embodies both playful homage and serious craftsmanship — a reminder that history, like gold, continues to shine.
