At the intersection of the Santa Monica mountains and the Pacific Ocean, The Surfrider Hotel is an exclusively guest-only boutique hotel consisting of 20 rooms, a curated library (including books, guitars, games) and an open-air roof deck bar, restaurant and lounge space. Just like your own beach house, rooms come with complimentary surfboards, stand up paddles boards, beach umbrellas, beach baskets and hybrid Mini Coopers for exploring the coast and mountains.

Originally built in 1953 but undergoing major renovations from 2014-2017 The Surfrider, as we know it today, was designed by owner-architect, local boy Matthew Goodwin, to feel like a guest’s very own California Beach House, complete with staff.

Interiors by Emma Goodwin, Aussie native. With an Aussie and Californian at the helm, summer is sure to be sweet. Rooms are cool, crisp and airy, and offer an understated and fresh design that feels more ‘home’ than ‘hotel’ with raw and natural materials, custom furniture and a color palette that is perfect for the beachside setting, where sandy feet are part of the story. Every room has a private terrace, upstairs rooms have custom-made hammocks and ocean views.

The roof deck has a fire pit for nights spent under the stars. The food and drinks are local, organic and a celebration of California, that nod to local farmers, sustainable fisherman, natural winemakers, small batch distilleries and craft breweries.

Wellness menus, juices, smoothies and picnics are available for the ultimate summer beach vacation. More on that below. The beach house is located at the base of the Santa Monica mountains, opposite the Pacific Ocean, overlooking iconic Surfrider Beach (it’s namesake) and Malibu Pier. Walking distance from Malibu Country Mart, Nobu and Soho House’s Little Beach House outpost it’s the perfect Malibu location (although, most people see no reason to leave the beach house!).

It’s a 20 minute drive to Santa Monica, 25 minutes to Venice and 45 minutes to West Hollywood or DTLA; the perfect destination for a staycation. Or, a perfect stopping point on the ultimate California road trip both because of it’s physical location and it’s access to the “locals Malibu”. Some of California’s most beautiful and accessible nature is right on the doorstep including a wide variety of hikes and beaches. Upon arrival, guests are given a Surfrider Guide to Malibu including tips that only locals know.

Days are based around the sun, tides, ocean, mountains and attention to what matters most. The Surfrider “Little Blue Book” includes a rolodex of hyper local vendors, trainers, instructors from surfing, acupuncture, fitness training, yoga, sound baths, energy healing, farm tours, in-room massages and florists; all chosen to align with the ethos.

The team have worked in partnership with their trainers and therapists to create a yoga and massage program around the Surfrider experience right down to the custom oil from local flora and fauna and the flow.

The hospitality at The Surfrider is intuitive. All decisions have been made through the same lens developed and designed from vision to detail by the same team. This means that it’s a coherent vision. It’s a world that makes sense. Guest’s wants and needs have been entirely anticipated, and this allows them to inhabit the hotel intuitively.

The experience has been orchestrated to allow people to feel sociable or private as they wish, neither at the exclusion of the other. In keeping with this spirit the team who staff The Surfrider (most who have been their since they opened) have been picked as much for their experience as their emotional intelligence. These subtleties allows guests to feel at home in their California Beach House.

WHY THE SURFRIDER IS THE PLACE TO BE RIGHT NOW

First off, extra measures for the new world and some old things that make The Surfrider the perfect place to be:

Designed to be experienced like a guest’s own California Beach House.
Even before COVID The Surfrider was designed to feel like a guest’s private California Beach House and is the place to be when it comes to social distancing. The boutique hotel is 20 rooms in total and exclusively guest-only, meaning there is a minimal number of people at any one time. The hotel was originally designed to offer exactly what’s needed now; privacy and space, without compromising great vibes and good times.

The layout, even pre-COVID.

All 20 rooms are accessed from the outside. There are no indoor hallways or elevators. The guest-only bar and restaurant is also completely open air, on a roof deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean, First Point and the Malibu Pier. The tables and lounges are spaced out (even before COVID), in fact, there are only 9 seating areas on the deck to begin with, all at least 6 feet apart! Even at full capacity, it’s likely that guests will see less people at The Surfrider than they would at the grocery store.

Personalized welcome packs.

All printed collateral has been removed from guest rooms and instead is included in personal welcome packs completely customized for each guest. This includes fresh menus to use during guest stays. All collateral is printed on biodegradable recycled paper and a tree is planted for every guest, to make up for this change.

Custom-made Surfrider hand sanitizer

with AMASS Botanics, the small-batch gin makers behind their new botanical-enhanced products. This customized Surfrider sanitizer has been added to all guest rooms, common spaces and, for those who want to take some home with them, it’s available for purchase in the personally curated beach house boutique.

Minibars stocked fresh for each guest.

And tailored to pre-ordered customized
preferences. Or, removed completely for those who prefer, with a menu in their welcome pack for an “on- demand” mini bar.

Highest health and hygiene standards.

(That’s nothing new — they scored an unheard-of 99 out of 100 on a recent sanitization check, the highest seen in LA County in a years.) At The Surfrider, safety and good times can go hand in hand. Social distancing won't curb their charisma or sense of connection.

Custom-designed masks by local designer.

Even with all the PPE, they’re still looking cool and smiling with their eyes behind custom-designed masks by their friend, hatmaker, Nick Fouquet (made from vintage 60’s surf material which matches perfectly with their cool boiler suit uniforms).

Peace of mind without any sacrifices

In responding to COVD-19 The Surfrider has worked hard to innovate, so that rather than taking things away, any changes actually enhance the guest experience and offer even more of the sense of being looked after with no worries. Good vibes and great times aren’t going anywhere.

Complimentary morning coffee.

With hygiene in mind, the complimentary communal coffee station is no longer. Better though, complete your coffee preferences on check-in and your personal morning coffee order will
be delivered to your room, customized to you. For an extra kick before you hit
that early-morning surf try the Surfer’s Coffee — their MCT-oil-infused brew.

The Surfrider Policy: Community care

Like it did during the Woolsey fires, during the COVID closing The Surfrider Hotel kept its full team employed and paid throughout the closure and found silver lining in using the time to
ensure that the Summer of 2020 is better than ever, when locals need it most.

Frontline foods

During their COVID closure The Surfrider fed over 1,000 doctors, nurses and firefighters in partnership with Frontline Foods as their way of giving back.
