Becoming The Best You
In a world of universal deceit, living the truth becomes a revolutionary act — live your truth!
Many years ago I was at a wedding and saw this gorgeous woman standing out from the crowd. I was immediately drawn to her, not just because of her obvious beauty or incredible smile. She radiated warmth and light. In her presence, everything just felt more positive.
I am delighted to introduce you to Yaz, and her life coaching practice. The one thing I can do as an Editor of Dossier, and what I have always believed in with fervour, is to only introduce my readers to what I believe in. We all sometimes get stuck in old view points, or in a place where we need help to move forwards, and I know Yaz will be able to deliver.
We had a conversation about life coaching.
What led you to coaching?
I was feeling unsettled for a long time — as if I was just drifting with no direction — and the one thing I was certain of was that I didn’t want to go back to corporate HR. At the time I was writing my EMBA dissertation I remember talking to my supervisor who suggested a possible career in coaching. Having limited prior knowledge, I read up on coaching and it immediately resonated with me.
Coaching has the simplicity and clarity that I’ve been looking for in a career, coupled with the ability to make a positive difference in the lives of others. It’s forward looking rather than dwelling on the past — it’s about trusting your gut and intuition. I wanted to help people develop and connect with their best skills, their truth and their self-belief to succeed. Being a positive person and projecting this positivity onto others is what I find rewarding. We all want to be seen, to be listened to, understood and acknowledged. Therefore, coaching was a natural progression for me.
What can a client expect to gain from a series of sessions with you?
The premise is that we live at the centre of everything we’ve learnt and the intention of coaching is to provide the client with the skills necessary to interpret, re-evaluate and move forward in making their goals a reality.
The client can expect to balance the tension between head and heart in discovering their passion. You will learn to pinpoint the blocks that make you feel stuck and develop ways to work around these. You will develop confidence, a problem-solving mindset and a deeper sense of self, that will start to make it’s way into your everyday life, and change the way you make decisions.
What is coaching?
Coaching is done by a certified professional and is conducted in a unique way — based on the belief that the answers lie within us. It helps you get out of your head and work towards reaching your goals by asking explorative questions that help move you forward.
Life coaching has a significant positive impact on many aspects of one’s life; including enhanced well-being, attainment of goals, overcoming obstacles, alignment with values, strengths & purpose and successfully managing transitions. A coach is also someone who is separate from your personal life, who can look at your goals objectively and give you the validation that is necessary to get you started — a coach has no attachment to the outcome.
A coach will always follow your agenda and hold you accountable for what you say you will do. It is an equal partnership in which we design a step-by-step plan geared towards achieving your objectives. Coaching equips you with the tools to make the right decision for yourself and for your future.
What is your main area of expertise?
My main area of expertise is core energy coaching, which is identifying the clients degree of consciousness, awareness and power. Core energy coaching is about digging deep into our being and connecting this with outer experience in order to be fully present, resourceful and successful in whatever we choose. In a nutshell, core energy coaching is moving you away from total disregard to complete awareness.
By understanding energy — specifically being aware of yours, and knowing how to shift yourself out of it — you are able to tap into your true potential and perform at your best.
I don’t subscribe to the textbook approach to coaching. I truly believe in meeting the client where they’re at and making them comfortable with being uncomfortable — when our truth & wisdom is revealed, this is when growth happens.
I am excited by moving people forward and my clients can expect non-judgement, truth and humility from me. My clients are those who are ready and open to becoming a better version of themselves. It’s a conscious decision to want to make change, and if the client is not willing then no matter what is thrown at them, they will always have a problem with it.
What is your background briefly?
With an honours degree in Industrial Psychology, I had a successful career in Corporate HR for 16 years. My greatest joy throughout my career came not from fixing/implementing things but from seeing people excited to grow and become better at what they do.
After an extended sabbatical, I went on to study my Executive MBA in Cape Town, volunteered as a Mentor, and then completed a Core Energy Life Coaching course in London.
