Chambers Private Club Opens In Durban CBD
The Dossier team recently visited the newly opened Chambers Club in the heart of Durban. Set in the renovated Norman Eaton-designed Nedbank Building, the club overlooks a roof top garden, with wild grasses, waterways and trees, not a sight we see often in South Africa. A giant mural on the opposite building is the remarkable art piece of Anton Lembede by artist by Sakhile Mhlongo, commissioned by Chamber Club owners, Urban Lime, is the largest privately funded public art piece in KZN.
Urban Lime property is headed by Jonny Friedman, who has invested vast amounts in Durban’s urban renewal. Friedman is the man behind the transformation of Florida Road, and is a man on a mission with many buildings in KZN in process of renovation.
The Club is a stylish space for members to conduct meetings in boardrooms, screening rooms, private rooms, with the option of having lunch and drinks in the restaurant or outside terrace. There are various long and short term options available. The Club is open to the public for meals at night and weekends.
The food is as sophisticated as the space. We started with Tatsfield Farm burrata and the Tuna tartare, avocado, mango, sriracha, buttermilk cracker. Then onto the Kingklip, grilled leeks, mussel risotto, grapefruit, chicken jus, and the Ribeye on the bone with Béarniase sauce. For a new kitchen - always a test - our team was blown away by the freshness, quality of produce, and presentation. The food, service, desserts are all of exceptional standard that you would expect of a private club in London.
Make time to view the art on display - it hosts some of the finest artists in the country.
