Constantia’s beyond Restaurant to host The LivingRoom at Summerhill

Constantia’s beyond Restaurant to host The LivingRoom at Summerhill for  a Heritage Month collaboration.

Chef Sebastian Stehr and Chef Johannes Richter will present an evening in celebration of South Africa’s culinary diversity.

Cape Town – On the 6th of September, South Africa’s Chef of the Year, Johannes Richter, will be cooking alongside the acclaimed Chef Sebastian Stehr at the Eat Out Two-Star beyond Restaurant on Buitenverwachting Wine Estate in Constantia.

The two chefs, who share an affinity for shining a spotlight on often-overlooked indigenous ingredients, have long respected one another’s work.

“Heritage Month provided the perfect backdrop for this collaboration,” says Stehr, adding, “Chef Johannes’s cooking is such a beautiful representation of KwaZulu-Natal and all it provides, and I’m excited to serve up our interpretation of the Cape alongside his.”

The chefs will present a seven-course menu, taking diners on a journey across the east and west coasts of the country and the produce they respectively provide.

Underlining the collaboration is both chefs’ fervent dedication to sustainability.

The LivingRoom, recipient of the Eat Out Woolworths Green Star Award 2025, is renowned for its hyper-sustainable ethos, which includes the use of endemic, indigenous seasonal ingredients and ancient grains, sourced from small-scale local farmers and producers – the majority within a 100 km radius of the restaurant – a minimal-waste kitchen, fire-based cooking using the wood of invasive alien species, and running the restaurant entirely on solar power, while ensuring the well-being of its team and community.

At beyond, Stehr is equally passionate. What began as a project to showcase indigenous ingredients of the Cape Floristic Kingdom has evolved into the development and planting of an indigenous garden on the wine estate, allowing the team to harvest these uniquely Cape flora while leaving their natural ecosystems untouched.

“It’s always fantastic to cook with someone who shares an ethos or vision. Sebastian and I are certainly on the same page when it comes to both cooking philosophy and sustainability, and I think that’s going to make these dinners really special,” says Richter.

The pairings for the evening will be curated by the restaurants’ respective sommeliers, Jennifer Hugé and Johanna Richter.

The dinner will take place on the 6th of September, at beyond, with seats for this once-off event priced at R2,750.00 per person – including beverage pairing and gratuity.
