Converse X Basquiat
Converse is really pulling at my generation’s heart strings with their new colabs. First, the Keith Harring collection, now expanding the art range with the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Part of the infamous 27 club, he died in 1988 of a heroin overdose, leaving a great many pieces of works and broken hearts. Debbie Harry was the first person to buy a work from him. He was part of the New York late 70’s life, when the city was rough, rent was cheap and talent was rife. It was the time punk, hip hop, graffitti and night life was born. Warhol, Madonna, Harring, so many great artists came from that period of time when life was rough and parties were many.
Today his work is collected by musicians, sports legends, the super wealthy - his paintings are setting records for sale prices.

Converse brings the barrier-breaking work of Jean-Michel Basquiat back to the street. The collaboration translates some of his most influential pieces to new clothing, customizable Chucks and Converse classics—highlighting the signature crown motif throughout the collection. The Skidgrip, Chuck 70 and Chuck Taylor All Star canvasses become a street-ready gallery for some of the most transformative works in modern history. A new generation is ready to wear the crown.
The Converse x Basquiat will launch online at www.converse.co.za, Converse Sandton City and Shelflife from Thursday, 16 September 2021.
