From Vine to Glass: Honouring South Africa’s Wine Pioneers

The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event is an annual gathering that is a tribute to the visionaries, pioneers, and dedicated people who have shaped the industry. It also marks the birthday of South African wine, offering a moment of reflection, gratitude, and celebration for an industry that has stood the test of time.

With its blend of glamour and tradition, recognition and reverence, the event plays a vital role in shaping the future of South African wine. And the next chapter is already being written: The 2026 Wine Harvest Commemorative Event will take place on Thursday, 5 February 2026, once again hosted at Groot Constantia Wine Estate, South Africa’s oldest wine-producing farm. Industry nominations are now open, closing on 1 July 2025.

A Celebration of Commitment and Progress
The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event shines a spotlight on those who have put in years—and even decades—of dedication to making the South African wine industry what it is today.

In 2025, the spotlight fell on a remarkable group of individuals:
• Johann Krige, recipient of the 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership, recognised for his lasting impact on the industry.
• Praisy Dlamini, whose work in the Growing Inclusivity category reflects the event’s commitment to diversity and transformation.
• Bennie Howard, a true champion of Wine Advancement, whose expertise and passion have left an indelible mark.
• Jan Booysen, whose contributions in Viti- and Viniculture continue to push the boundaries of South African winemaking.
•    Marcus Lewis, the first-ever recipient of the Wine Agri-Worker—adjudicated by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture—acknowledging the indispensable role of farmworkers in shaping the industry’s future.

The recipients, who embody the innovative, inclusive, and tradition-rooted spirit of South African wine, earn their awards through a rigorous selection process ensuring only those with lasting influence are recognised at the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event—made possible by the generous support of Groot Constantia, Standard Bank, Air France-KLM, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, South Africa Wine, Wesgro, Die Burger, Cape Town Tourism, MCC Labels, and Seabourne Logistics.
