We asked Maria Chrysomallos, Men’s Director at Boss Models, about the world of male modelling.

What is the biggest difference between the male and female modelling industry?

Categorically, female featured advertising has been a bigger market and as such, there have been greater opportunities for female models in all advertising categories, skincare, fashion, beauty, swimwear etc. This has changed drastically over time. Bearing in mind, with the social constructs of gender becoming increasingly irrelevant, advertising has become a much more inclusive space and does not conform to the gender binary as it once did.

Has the pay gap between male and female models equalised? It was rumoured for many years that it was not as lucrative as female industry, is that still true?

Historically, female models have always earned much higher rates than male models, however in the past few years this has become less prevalent.

What do you think sets a model apart? Why are some models more successful than others?

Hard work ethic, professionalism, and remaining authentic to themselves and their brand.

What would you advice be to a would-be male model?

Find a reputable agency and be prepared to work hard. We have also found that having passions outside of modelling help them deal with the inconsistencies of an ever-changing industry.

Its seems to us that the longevity of a male models career seems longer than female, with the grey fox look being such a thing, is this true?

Once again, that may have been true 5-10 years ago but with the swing towards health and wellbeing, with age positivity being reflected in mainstream popular culture, this has opened the door to greater advertising opportunities for all ages, men and women.

Who are the most successful male models at Boss at the moment?

It all depends on what your definition of success is. A person’s ability to use their platform and career to make a difference in the world or only their financial success?

We prefer to ascertain what each individuals goals are, assist them in finding ways of achieving those goals and once that has been done, we believe that to be success.
