Hotel Belmar Introduces Artista, a Regenerative Luxury Villa Collection in the Monteverde Cloud Forest

Ten design-forward villas blend mountain architectural traditions, organic materials, and Costa Rican craftsmanship in a low-impact retreat

Hotel Belmar announces the debut of Artista, a natural evolution of its long-standing commitment to regenerative hospitality. Set within Monteverde’s iconic cloud forest in a fully car-free enclave adjacent to the main Belmar property, ten private retreats take shape, honoring the land through thoughtful design and long-term stewardship. The villas are expected to welcome guests beginning June 1, 2026.

“Artista represents a natural progression in our journey. It reflects how our understanding of this land has deepened over time. We approached each villa as an artist approaches a work — carefully composing space, material, and light in dialogue with the forest. Hospitality, for us, is an act of creation grounded in responsibility to the land that sustains it,” said Pedro Belmar, one of the owners of Hotel Belmar.

 A Commitment to Regenerative Hospitality

Artista is not an expansion in scale but an expansion in purpose. It advances Belmar’s most ambitious expression of regenerative hospitality to date. The project is pursuing CORE Green Building Certification™ by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), one of the world’s most rigorous sustainability standards, recognizing high performance in energy efficiency, environmental impact reduction, and regenerative design.

“At Belmar, sustainability isn’t a feature; it is the foundation of everything we do,” said Belmar. “For us, growth can and must seek to strengthen both the land and the community it is part of.”

The innovations introduced through Artista are designed to inform future improvements across Belmar’s operations, strengthening energy performance, water stewardship, and regenerative practices property wide.

Eco-Conscious Construction: In partnership with Costa Rican-Swiss firm Nestetik, the villas use regionally harvested, FSC-certified mass timber in place of conventional steel or concrete. The modular system reduces carbon emissions, material waste, and energy use.

Low-Impact Materials: Materials such as bagacreto (a sugarcane fiber–based drywall alternative) and HDPE (a durable and recyclable material used in place of conventional PVC) further reduce environmental impact.

Water Stewardship: Rainwater harvesting and the BioNest biological treatment system reduce consumption while enabling recycled water for irrigation, laundry, and other non-potable uses. These systems are projected to lower water use by at least 50% compared to conventional hospitality models, with a long-term goal of net-zero or water-positive performance.

Energy Efficiency: Thermal modeling, passive airflow strategies, solar-filtered glazing, on-site solar generation, and high-efficiency heat pump systems are expected to reduce energy consumption by at least 70% compared to baseline hospitality projects.

Ecosystem Restoration: Built on land once used for cattle grazing and populated with exotic cypress and invasive grasses, the project advances a long-term restoration plan focused on reintroducing native species, strengthening biodiversity, and supporting ecological resilience — reinforcing Belmar’s role as steward of the landscape.

 Immersive Design Rooted in Nature

Informed by the alpine traditions that have historically shaped Hotel Belmar and refined through a close study of Nordic and mid-century mountain architecture, the villas express a contemporary mountain language rooted in Monteverde. Clean lines meet organic materials in a warmth that feels modern yet grounded, while interiors extend this language through layered wood and glass, tactile detailing.

Throughout the project, Belmar collaborated with Costa Rican artisans, cabinetmakers, and craftspeople whose work contributes to the character and authenticity of the villas while strengthening the local creative economy. This collaboration extends beyond construction to include partnerships with local initiatives such as CASEM, a women’s cooperative producing embroidered textiles, as well as illustrators, painters, and photographers from Monteverde and across Costa Rica, whose work is integrated into the experience of each villa.

Each of the ten villas is a standalone sanctuary for couples, families, or small groups. The collection includes seven one-bedroom villas averaging 120 m² (1,295 ft²) and three two-bedroom villas averaging 200 m² (2,155 ft²), accommodating up to four or six guests.

Features include:

  • Independent bedrooms connected through glass-enclosed passageways

  • Double rain showers

  • A spacious central living area

  • Dedicated Studio in the one-bedroom villas

  • Chef-service kitchen in the two-bedroom villas

  • Large private terrace with saltwater plunge pool

Beyond architecture and sustainability, Artista is designed to support restoration and creative expansion. Select villas include a dedicated Studio, offering space for reading, writing, or quiet work, where thoughtfully curated materials and prompts encourage focused creativity and natural restoration. Sleep-supportive elements — informed by expert guidance in functional medicine and nervous system health — including low, warm lighting aligned with natural circadian rhythms, immersion in the forest’s soundscape, and intentionally television-free interiors — promote deeper rest. Together, these elements nurture creativity and renewal.

Hotel Belmar’s recent inclusion as the first Costa Rican member of Design Hotels™ underscores its long-standing commitment to intentional design and cultural authenticity. As part of a curated global collection of independent properties distinguished by originality and creative vision, this milestone aligns Artista with a community that celebrates meaningful design and mindful hospitality.
