Louis Vuitton : Fashion Eye books on Buenos Aires and Las Vegas
CELEBRATING THE ART OF TRAVEL SINCE 1854, THIS AUTUMN LOUIS VUITTON IS SETTING
OFF AGAIN FOR NEW HORIZONS, WITH THE PUBLICATION OF TWO NEW TITLES IN ITS FASHION EYE SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS: BUENOS AIRES BY SOFIA & MAURO AND LAS VEGAS BY JEFF BURTON. AS WITH THE PREVIOUS TITLES, EACH BOOK REVEALS A COUNTRY, REGION, CITY OR PLACE THROUGH THE EYES OF A FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER.
The duo of Argentine photographers Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello, revisit the Buenos Aires of their youth, endowing it with a gently wistful aura. For his part, the American photographer Jeff Burton offers a sensual and unvarnished portrait of an ebullient Las Vegas.
A natural fit for the soul of travel, photography is an evident form of expression for Louis Vuitton. Our editorial process makes sure that the book is granted the status of a medium in its own right, with the singular aim of continually renewing its visual vocabulary in different ways. Fashion Eye is a tailor made series: each type of paper or binding, each layout, and sometimes even the printing processes used, in keeping with artisanal tradition, serve the title at hand. For a book is first and foremost the work of an author, a designer and a printer.
Title after title, a broad compendium of perspectives emerges, one that shifts with the destinations, including urban panoramas and natural landscapes, scenes of local
life, and more contemplative work, with images in colour and/or blackand white. Each book in the series features an ample selection of large format photographs, accompanied by biographical information and
an interview with the photographer or a critical essay. Fashion Eye gives rise to an unprecedented dialogue between emerging talents, seasoned photographers and fashion photography legends. It confronts contemporary creation with little known archival treasures to create a collection of invaluable reference works, as much in terms of its approach as its aesthetics.
FASHION EYE BUENOS AIRES
Returning to Buenos Aires on three separate occasions for this book,
the Argentine photographers Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello sought each time to go further in representing the city and its ambience. The far-reaching exploration they present to us here lifts the lid on a fascinating and unfiltered Buenos Aires. As they lead us on a journey imbued with nostalgia, they are as drawn to seemingly meaningless details as they are to the people living in the city. We feel like
we are seeing the capital first-hand, with the eyes of those who have left it behind. Through images in frank yet faded tones, the duo’s fantasy vision, combined with their growing interest in portraiture, plays out in the streets of this city still vibrating with the soul of Jorge Luis Borges.

SOFIA SANCHEZ
& MAURO MONGIELLO
Born in Buenos Aires, Sofia Sanchez
and Mauro Mongiello met while she was studying cinema and he was playing in a rock band. Soon afterwards they began taking photographs together, which were featured in local magazines. They moved to Paris in 2001 and were named as the winners of the Prix Picto de la Photographie de Mode the very next year. Exhibitions of their work followed at the French capital’s leading cultural institutions.
Sofia & Mauro’s images are characterised by a spot-on sense of colour as well as a touch of surrealism. Today, their photographs appear regularly in major international magazines including Numéro, The New York Times Magazine, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, The New Yorker, Flair and Vogue. Although they can be seen as drawing inspiration from their religious education, a hint of rebelliousness pervades their work, owing
as much to Guy Bourdin as Helmut Newton.
FASHION EYE LAS VEGAS
The American photographer Jeff Burton, who likes to say that “glamour has some dark elements and beauty has some melancholy,” shows us Sin City under a new light. Far from clichés about gambling and casinos, it is instead the city’s contradictions that burst into view here, from the enchantment of the most spectacular stage shows to the brutality of mixed martial arts competitions, punctuated by a few moments suspended in time. Burton succeeds in deftly capturing the aura of Las Vegas, which can sometimes take on immense contours. Who better than a former still photographer on adult film sets, known for his skill in giving a warm and enticing look to bodies, to reveal the heterogeneity of all those who work actively to maintain the city’s greatness? From candid shots to agile symphonies of light, it is amid this sultry atmosphere that the full beauty of Las Vegas is revealed.

JEFF BURTON
BorninAnaheim,Californiain1963, Jeff Burton spent his childhood in Texas.
He stayed there to pursue his education at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, before returning to the West Coast for his MFA at the California Institute of the Arts, graduating in 1989.
While working as a still photographer on gay adult film sets, Burton began taking shots of whatever else caught his eye to fend off boredom between scenes. It was these in-between images that drew the attention of the gallerist Casey Kaplan, before a Japanese publisher revealed his work to the world through the book Untitled (Composite Press) in 1998.
He then further broadened his range of subjects, turning his lens on other bodies, more often female and clothed, but always with a strong emphasis on sensuality. In the fashion world, he has garnered a following for the warmth he gives to skin tones, his sense of framing, and his way with colour. Burton’s work is regularly featured in magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, W, Vogue Homme and Numéro. He has collaborated on advertising campaigns for many leading brands, including Tom Ford, Cartier, Celine, MAC Cosmetics, YSL, Lancôme, Pomellato, Hennessy and Cerruti.
