She’s a mentor to budding entrepreneurs, a fierce advocate for diversity, and an unstoppable force pushing for a more responsible fashion future.

Editor’s Note: A Sitting with Margo Fargo

We decided to capture Margo in a setting that powerfully symbolizes the fight against fast fashion—a scorched field of burnt grass, trees, and plants. This backdrop speaks volumes about the destructive cycle of consumerism, as seen through the lens of fast fashion’s unsustainable practices.

The first shots show Margo walking through this desolate, charred landscape, embodying the emotional weight of unchecked consumerism. As she navigates the wreckage, she reflects on the impact of fast fashion, symbolizing a battle against waste. Emerging victorious, Margo stands as a beacon of light, draped in a stunning IMPRINT fit crafted from recycled materials and offcuts from past collections. The imagery speaks not only to her fight for a more sustainable future but also to the beauty and innovation that can come from conscious fashion choices.

In this visual narrative, Margo reclaims the burnt field—just as she is reclaiming fashion’s potential for positive change—proving that sustainability and style are far from mutually exclusive.

Sustainability in Fashion: A Conversation with Margo Fargo

What first sparked your interest in sustainability within the fashion industry?

"During my studies in Consumer Sciences, I discovered the massive environmental footprint that the fashion industry leaves behind—from the production of textiles to the overwhelming waste. It became clear to me that the way we produce and consume fashion needed a serious shift. My experiences in the industry only reinforced this. I wanted to see a future where fashion wasn’t just about aesthetics but also about responsibility."

What are the biggest challenges the fashion industry faces in becoming more sustainable?

"There are several hurdles, but overproduction and waste stand out. The fast fashion model creates a cycle of overconsumption, with trends that move faster than we can keep up with. Then there's supply chain transparency—many brands don’t even know where all their materials come from. And while sustainable fabrics are out there, they’re often more expensive, which makes them harder to scale. Consumer education is also a challenge; shifting focus from cheap, trendy items to long-lasting, ethical fashion is a huge task. But without proper regulations, these sustainable efforts will remain voluntary."

How do you incorporate sustainability into your personal style?

"For me, sustainability is all about mindfulness. I invest in quality pieces that stand the test of time, like a great blazer or classic jeans. Second-hand shopping is another big one—I love finding unique pieces that have a story. I also support brands that are committed to ethical production, and when I can, I upcycle or customize my clothes to give them new life. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about feeling good knowing that my choices are contributing to a better world."

Any favorite sustainable brands or designers?

Oh, absolutely! The Joinery is a must. They’re all about eco-conscious designs and supporting local artisans. Then there’s AKJP, a Cape Town-based brand that focuses on slow fashion with sustainable fabrics. Patagonia is another leader in sustainability—they promote circular fashion through their Worn Wear program. Rethread is fantastic too, really embodying the upcycling movement."

What advice would you give consumers who want to be more mindful when shopping for clothes?

"Start by supporting local and ethical brands. South African labels like The Joinery and SELFI are great examples. Choose quality over quantity—buy fewer pieces but make sure they’re durable and timeless. Thrifting is also a fantastic way to reduce waste and find some hidden gems. And do your research! Look for sustainable materials like organic cotton, tencel or hemp, and don’t be afraid to upcycle or repair your clothes rather than throwing them away."

Sustainable and Stylish: Yes, You Can Have Them Both

What advice would you give to someone who wants to transition their wardrobe to be more sustainable?

"First, assess your current wardrobe. You might be surprised at how much you can do with what you already have. From there, start with second-hand or pre-loved shopping—it’s a great way to find unique pieces without contributing to new production. Also, focus on sustainable materials like organic cotton or recycled fabrics. And don’t forget to support brands that prioritize ethical practices. Lastly, take care of your clothes! Proper maintenance can really extend their lifespan."

How can individuals balance fast fashion with environmental consciousness?

"It’s all about embracing slow fashion. You can still enjoy trends but be mindful about how you integrate them into your wardrobe. Buy fewer but better-quality pieces that you can style in multiple ways. Thrifting fast fashion is another smart move—you get the latest styles without contributing to overproduction. And for those must-have statement pieces? Renting is a fantastic alternative."

What roles do influencers and celebrities play in promoting sustainability in fashion?

"They’re absolutely pivotal! Influencers have such a wide reach, and their endorsements can really shift consumer behaviour. When they highlight sustainable brands, they set trends that their followers are eager to emulate. Celebrities can also collaborate with eco-friendly brands, launching collections that bring more attention to sustainability. Beyond that, they can advocate for policy changes and support environmental causes—using their platform for real, systemic impact."

Margo Fargo isn’t just talking about sustainability; she’s living it, one stylish, eco-friendly step at a time. Whether you’re looking to make a few small swaps or completely overhaul your wardrobe, her journey is proof that you can be both sustainable and stylish—no compromises necessary.
