Menswear, Street Style & The Art of the Lens - Martyna Mierzejewska

Menswear, Street Style & The Art of the Lens - Martyna Mierzejewska

By Leon Haasbroek

Warsaw-born photographer Martyna Mierzejewska didn’t grow up with a camera in hand or dreams of becoming a photographer - in fact, her early years were rooted in the world of National Security studies. But somewhere between university lectures and a growing fascination with the artistry of global fashion weeks, the seeds of her future career quietly took root. She would spend hours poring over images of Pitti Uomo, Milan, Paris, and New York Fashion Weeks - not with the intent of shooting them herself, but to immerse in the energy, style, and effortless individuality captured in those frames.

Her curiosity for fashion deepened while collaborating with a Polish magazine, interviewing stylish personalities across the country. Those conversations became windows into new worlds of creativity, and one day, hearing about the elegance and energy of Pitti Uomo lit a spark that would never fade. Around this time, Martyna’s love for menswear also began to form - a passion that would later define her career.

The New York Chapter
In 2017, Martyna’s path shifted entirely when she moved to the United States for a cultural exchange program. The destination was no accident - it was always going to be New York City. She wanted to live the city from the inside, connect with locals, and absorb its rhythm. The plan was open-ended, but the creative pull was undeniable.

She bought her first Fujifilm camera, intending to document the city’s streets. What she didn’t expect was to be completely captivated by the fashion culture and the striking street style of SoHo. “It was a completely different world for me,” she recalls. “I was amazed by the beauty, originality, and uniqueness of the people in New York City.” That amazement transformed into a mission: to capture and celebrate diversity through her lens.

Her early days were entirely self-taught, starting in auto mode and focusing on storytelling rather than technical precision. The challenges were real - her smaller camera meant people often underestimated her, forcing her to prove her skill with the shots she took. Yet each frame built her confidence, shaping a style that now blends energy, intimacy, and an unmistakable love for her style muses.

Finding Her Lens in Menswear
Martyna’s first experience at New York Fashion Week revealed something important - while womenswear was captivating, it didn’t spark the same connection she felt when immersed in menswear. Menswear, with its bold tailoring, layered textures, and powerful silhouettes, resonated with her in a way nothing else did. From sharp suits at Pitti Uomo to the fearless creativity of AfroPunk, her portfolio became a testament to masculine style in all its forms.

Florence quickly became a favourite city, and Pitti Uomo a biannual pilgrimage. Back home in Europe, she fell hard for Copenhagen Fashion Week - a space she describes as the most diverse, vibrant, and inspiring in all of Europe. “Being part of such a mix of creativity and openness has really changed how I see things as a photographer,” she says.

 From Sidewalks to Fashion Capitals
Accessing the inner circles of major fashion weeks wasn’t instant. Martyna’s entry point was shooting for Polish magazines, which helped her build the portfolio needed to secure credentials. In New York, her confidence sometimes got her into shows without an official pass - but in Europe, the rules were more rigid, making magazine partnerships essential. Over time, her name became synonymous with polished, authentic street style coverage, and her portfolio expanded to Paris, Milan, London, Florence, and beyond.

Each city has its personality: Milan loves big logos and familiar faces; Paris thrives on its celebrity draw and creative diversity; Copenhagen pulses with new ideas; New York, for her, will always be about the street more than the shows.

Beyond the Street - Backstage, Runway & Stage
Martyna’s portfolio isn’t limited to sidewalks. At Fashion Week, her lens has captured some of the industry’s most recognisable figures, including Anna Wintour, Cher, Christina Aguilera, and Olivier Rousteing.

Backstage at music festivals, she hones a slower, more deliberate style, catching the quiet moments before the spectacle. On stage, she thrives on movement and energy, photographing musicians such as Justin Timberlake, Sam Smith, Doja Cat, and 21 Savage. Music festivals in Poland and Berlin have offered some of her most meaningful opportunities, merging her love of performance with her eye for style.

Her personal projects - including WHY NEW YORK? and Street Fashion — were never intended for publication, but remain an archive of her early vision. Today, she dreams of a global men’s fashion album, capturing stylish men from different industries, cultures, and corners of the world.

Global Collaborations & Next Horizons
Her work has been featured in Esquire (Singapore & Poland), Elle Man, nss magazine, and Vogue Scandinavia, as well as campaigns for fashion brands. These projects balance creative freedom with meeting editorial or brand requirements - often involving mood boards, location scouting, and meticulous planning.

Currently based in Warsaw, Martyna is weighing a move to Scandinavia or Paris, each offering its own distinctive creative energy. Looking ahead, she plans to broaden her lens into sports photography - from the raw grit of boxing to the high-octane world of Formula 1.

A Season of Growth
Looking back, Martyna counts her personal and professional growth over the last two years as her proudest achievement. “My perspective on photography has changed dramatically,” she says. “I’ve become more confident in what I do, and I approach my work differently now.” Her advice to aspiring photographers is simple: “Take the leap - Send the emails. Make the connections. Show yourself on social media. And enjoy the process - I’m still learning this myself.

From Warsaw to New York to fashion capitals around the world, Martyna Mierzejewska has carved out a place where menswear, diversity, and street culture converge - and her lens is only getting sharper.
