Monastero Santa Rosa — A Sanctuary Above the Sea

Monastero Santa Rosa — A Sanctuary Above the Sea

Perched high above the Gulf of Salerno, Monastero Santa Rosa is carved into the cliffs between Amalfi and Positano. Once a 17th‑century monastery built beside a 13th‑century church, its ancient bones have been lovingly restored into one of the Amalfi Coast’s most extraordinary hotels. Vaulted stone interiors, terraced gardens, and discreet confessionals whisper of its past, while lemon groves and sea air drift through corridors that still carry the soul of contemplation.

Setting the Scene

This is a place where history is not only preserved but lived. From the scent of citrus to the view of the Mediterranean stretching below, Monastero Santa Rosa offers guests immersion in heritage and landscape.

Getting There

Located in Conca dei Marini, a fishing village in the heart of the Amalfi Coast, the property is accessible by car or boat from Naples, with Ravello providing the nearest helicopter landing point. A complimentary shuttle connects guests to Amalfi and Positano, ensuring seamless access to the coast’s highlights.

History

Founded in 1681 by Sister Rosa Pandolfi, the monastery became woven into local life — funding aqueducts, running an apothecary, and creating the now‑iconic Sfogliatella Santa Rosa. After centuries of change, the property was reborn in 2012 following a decade‑long restoration led by Bianca Sharma. Today, her son Nathan guides the hotel, preserving its heritage while shaping its future.

The Rooms

With only 20 rooms and suites, each named after herbs once grown in the monastery gardens, the hotel offers intimacy and character. Interiors are layered with antique textiles, rich fabrics, and custom details, while select suites feature private terraces overlooking the Amalfi Coast.

The Food

Executive Chef Alonso Crescenzo crafts cuisine rooted in Campanian tradition. Breakfast begins with the monastery’s signature sfogliatella, lunch is sun‑drenched at Il Mezzogiorno Poolside Café, and evenings culminate at the Michelin‑starred Il Refettorio. Dishes celebrate local produce — seafood from nearby fishermen, vegetables from the gardens, olive oil pressed in the region.

The Spa

Partnering with Santa Maria Novella, the spa is globally recognised as one of the finest on the Amalfi Coast. Treatments draw on lemon, rosemary, lavender, and bergamot, while the Thermal Suite and open‑air Treatment Garden offer spaces of profound restoration.

The Gardens & Beyond

Terraced gardens cascade toward the sea, tended daily by Head Gardener Michele Scala. Guests can join yoga on the outdoor deck, hike the Path of the Gods, explore Ravello’s villas, or charter boats to Capri. Every experience is curated to connect guests with the land and sea.

Boutique & Team

The boutique offers linen clothing, kaftans, jewellery, and artisanal goods, many featured throughout the hotel. At the helm, Nathan Sharma leads with humility and detail, supported by a team deeply rooted in local culture.

Monastero Santa Rosa is more than a hotel; it is a sanctuary where history, landscape, and hospitality converge. A place where the past is felt in every stone, and the present unfolds in moments of quiet luxury above the Amalfi Coast.
