OKAPI Introduces The Cunard Collection by Tiaan Nagel

South African luxury brand Okapi marks a bold new creative chapter with the debut of The Cunard Collection, the first collection under the direction of Tiaan Nagel. Known for his distinctive editorial eye and deep engagement with contemporary culture, Nagel brings a refined perspective to Okapi—balancing sculptural design, craftsmanship, and cultural dialogue.

The collection draws inspiration from Constantin Brancusi’s 1932 bronze portrait of Nancy Cunard, La Jeune Fille Sophistiquée. Cunard, the avant‑garde icon of the 1920s, was celebrated for her fearless advocacy of African art and culture, shaping a new global conversation around identity.

“Cunard was a fascinating figure; intellectually fearless, visually arresting, with an irrepressible spirit,” says Nagel. “Her bold aesthetic—architectural, layered, and expressive—was the departure point for the collection.”

Sculptural Luxury

The Cunard Collection translates this visual language into a series of sculptural handbag forms. Inspired by Brancusi’s work and layered with references to Cunard’s iconic jewelry stacks and styling, each piece is reimagined through Okapi’s commitment to heritage craftsmanship and contemporary African luxury.

Founder Hanneli Rupert emphasizes that while Okapi evolves under Nagel’s creative direction, it remains grounded in artisanal skill, responsible sourcing, and respect for the communities it works with.
