Between 2012 & 2016 Bra Hugh travelled regularly to Trinidad where he became entranced by the Calypso rhythms of this beautiful Caribbean island and the lilting sound of the local steel pan orchestras.
Soon after meeting local bandleader Akinola Sennon of the Siparia Deltones Orchestra, they embarked on a musical journey - linking Siparia, the Trinidadian port town where the Deltones are based, to Soweto.
Seven years after these songs were recorded, this unique cross-cultural collaboration – ‘Siparia to Soweto’ – between Hugh Masekela and the Siparia Deltones Steel Orchestra, finally sees the light of day. Bra Hugh gives these Calypso tracks his distinct Masekela flavour.
Today, on the fifth anniversary of Bra Hugh’s 2018 passing, the lead single ‘The Meeting Place’ (Amapiano Version) is OUT NOW!!!
The song is a creation from ace composer Carlton “Zanda” Alexander and the Deltones’ director/arranger Akinola Sennon featuring the late legendary South African musician Hugh Masekela and Trinidad’s King of Soca Machel Montano.
The Siparia Deltones will be playing ‘The Meeting Place’ as their entry in the 2023 Panorama Medium Conventional Band competition.
This track is the inspiration behind Machel 40 – One Show – The Meeting Place, a night connecting Africa and the Caribbean, tradition and technology, the past and the future, in the heart of present-day Carnival!
This Ampiano remix is the modern South African sound that has taken the world by storm, this release is the first chapter of a rich story that will be told in the coming weeks.
