hen Ben Gorham founded Byredo in 2006, he was a painter turned perfumer, intent on translating memory and emotion into fragrance. HalfIndian, halfSwedish, and raised between Toronto and

Stockholm, Gorham’s multicultural background gave him a unique lens on identity and storytelling. With Bal d’Afrique, one of his earliest and most enduring creations, he drew inspiration from his father’s travel diaries across Africa — a decade of encounters, landscapes, and cultural vibrancy distilled into scent.
