Hampton by Hilton opens in Sandton

By Leon Haasbroek

When I received an invitation to experience the launch of Hampton by Hilton Sandton Grayston, I was immediately intrigued. Nestled in the heart of Johannesburg’s financial and shopping district, this 158-room hotel is designed for travellers seeking a warm and reliable stay in the city’s bustling core.

The evening’s festivities kicked off the moment I stepped inside - albeit somewhat unceremoniously through the basement entrance - completely unaware that an entire entertainment stage had been set up in front of the entrance. What awaited was a night of laughter, carnival-style fun, and unexpected reunions.

From the outset, the Hampton by Hilton Sandton team set the tone for a warm and seamless experience. The management staff greeted me with genuine hospitality, offering to assist with my luggage. It’s a small gesture, yes, but after a long and exhausting day, that kind of attentiveness makes all the difference. All I truly wanted at that moment was a great cup of coffee and a little quiet time.

The event itself was nothing short of spectacular. Attended by media, celebrities, and key business partners of the Hilton Group, the launch carried a carnival theme, bringing with it an atmosphere of excitement and nostalgia. Guests indulged in a variety of food trucks, offering a tempting array of bites, while an interactive selection of games added a playful twist to the evening. The entertainment lineup was a powerhouse - Mafikizolo delivered an incredible live performance, while DJ Zinhle electrified the crowd with her signature beats, amplified by a dazzling laser light showcase.

While the entertainment was fantastic, for me, the true highlight of the evening was a personal one - a long-overdue reunion with Danny Painter of Jacaranda FM, who, in my opinion, remains one of the most talented radio hosts in the industry. After years apart, reconnecting in such a vibrant setting made the night unforgettable.

Post-event, we were fortunate to unwind in the comfort of our Hampton by Hilton Sandton rooms, as the hotel generously hosted the media for an overnight stay. And then came the morning shot - quite literally the pinnacle of the experience. The self-service hot breakfast was ready for us to dive into, featuring everything from classic favourites to Hampton by Hilton’s signature waffle. Admittedly, I wasn’t in the mood for a waffle at that hour, but it’s on my list for next time.

If I had one small critique, it would be the absence of room service - something I always appreciate in a hotel stay. However, the 24/7 Snacks offering makes up for it, providing a convenient selection of drinks and snacks for those on the go.

All in all, my stay was a pleasure, and the team at Hampton by Hilton Sandton delivered on their promise of warmth, efficiency, and reliability. Here is a little more about the hotel and its surroundings:

Hampton by Hilton Sandton Grayston is more than just a place to stay - it’s a space where local culture meets contemporary comfort. The interiors are elevated by a vibrant display of South African art, drawing inspiration from African landscapes and wildlife, creating an atmosphere that feels both modern and rooted in its surroundings. For those who like to stay active while traveling, The Active Hub offers a fully equipped fitness centre to keep your routine on track.

When it comes to accessibility, the hotel is perfectly positioned. The Gautrain station is just 1.8 kilometers away, providing a seamless connection to O.R. Tambo International Airport, it’s a stone throw away from key destinations like Sandton City Mall and Nelson Mandela Square. If you’re looking to explore the city’s creative pulse, the Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank - a vibrant cultural district brimming with galleries, design studios, and cafés - is just a 13-minute drive away.

For those keen on history, Constitution Hill offers a deep dive into South Africa’s rich heritage, while nature lovers willing to venture a little further will find themselves in awe of the Cradle of Humankind, one of the world's most significant anthropological sites. And if a wildlife adventure is on the agenda, the Lion & Safari Park promises an unforgettable experience just outside the city.

Whether you’re here for business or leisure, Hampton by Hilton Sandtonplaces you right in the heart of it all.
