Beauty Has No Time Limit: Barry Downard
Barry Downard & Scotta Campbell — a creative circle completed
Forty‑three years ago, art director Barry Downard was orchestrating photographers and models for his advertising clients. His interest in photography grew, and soon he began honing his own skills behind the lens. Among the models was a 19‑year‑old Scotta Campbell — a free spirit with an instinct for fashion, a gift for hair and make‑up, and, most importantly, a love of being in front of the camera.
By 1985, Barry had resigned from the agency to pursue the work he truly wanted, founding his own photography and design business. Scotta, meanwhile, had immersed herself in the avant‑garde world of Rei Kawakubo, working in a Comme des Garçons store in Paris and building a wardrobe of CdG garments that became part of Barry’s early portfolio shoots.
In 1990, Barry moved into a historic 1917 building in Durban, where he envisioned a monumental image to announce his new studio. Inspired by Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, he created Vai con il vento — “Go with the wind” — shot on Glenashley beach under a howling sky. Scotta, with her wild spirit, was central to this creative era, though her path soon led her to Australia, London, and finally Norway.
Then, in early 2026, Scotta returned to South Africa to reconnect with her roots. The opportunity to rekindle the creative partnership was irresistible. No longer by the ocean, Barry and Scotta turned to the indigenous forests of KwaZulu‑Natal. A length of raw silk, woven vines, dappled light, and Barry’s FujiFilm XT‑3 became the tools of a new vision. With Rose, Barry’s wife, assisting in styling and logistics, the shoot portrayed Scotta as the matriarch she has become — proof that beauty is timeless, and creativity knows no age.
This collaboration, spanning decades and continents, is more than a reunion. It is a testament to the enduring power of artistry, friendship, and the belief that beauty has no time limit.
