The beast is unleashed: Canon EOS R5

The beast is unleashed: Canon EOS R5

In March 2020, Canon released a statement saying they are “achieving the impossible”, with the yet to be released EOS R5’s video capabilities which was set to far exceed that of competing cameras on the market. With its ability to internally record 8K using the full width of the sensor at up to 30p, the latest Canon EOS R camera was set to redefine mirrorless with its market-leading features. In addition, in all 8K modes it will support Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

Canon Inc. also then confirmed the EOS R5 supports advanced animal AF – recognising dogs, cats and birds, relying not only on the eyes of the animal but also the face and body for situations when the eyes are not visible.

Richard Shepherd, Pro Product Marketing Senior Manager, said: “We’ve seen speculation that the EOS R5’s specs are ‘impossible’. Today’s announcement confirms once again, we are achieving the ‘impossible’ in order to support our customers’ need for a camera that delivers exceptional image quality and video capture.

“As an industry leader, we are challenging the market with this launch and showing what’s possible with our technology. The EOS R5 and the RF lens system is proof of our commitment to redefine mirrorless and shows Canon’s unparalleled strength in creating products with true purpose.”

  • The EOS R5 offers a step-change in performance with an incredible 12fps using the mechanical shutter and the electronic shutter offering 20fps

  • The EOS R5 takes Canon’s cutting-edge image stabilisation technology to the next level, by including a newly Canon-developed, in-camera image stabilisation system – which works in combination with the lens stabilisation system

  • With content delivery just as important as image and video capture, the EOS R5 supports automatic transfer of image files from the device to the image.canon cloud platform

  • The highly anticipated EOS R5 also features dual card slots for convenience.

By July 2020, Canon could n to keep ip with the demand.

Richard Shepherd, Pro Product Marketing Senior Manager, said: “Since we announced the EOS R5 in July the response from photographers and filmmakers has been outstanding, highlighting the capability of the autofocus system and the quality of the image and video recording output. We have been in awe at the phenomenal photographs and films that have already been produced. Demand continues to exceed supply and we are shipping cameras as quickly as possible to get them into the hands of creators. “We have welcomed feedback on areas for improvement of the EOS R5 and we continuously listen to customer feedback to inform the development of current and future products to ensure they meet the changing demands of creators. In the above firmware update we have included small but worthwhile improvements for EOS R5 video recording times based on early feedback.”

In addition to the EOS R5 firmware version 1.1.0, Canon is already working on further future updates in response to feedback about the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5. Canon plans to introduce the following video recording functions via a series of future firmware updates for those models.

Richard Shepherd, Pro Product Marketing Senior Manager, said: “We’re confident that the EOS R5 will shake up the global mirrorless market and we’re excited to see the content photographers and filmmakers will be able to capture with this outstanding new device in their hands.

“This camera highlights our commitment to mirrorless and the need to futureproof photography and filmmaking. We launched the innovative EOS R System in September 2018 with an array of RF lenses and the EOS R, soon followed by more RF lenses, the EOS RP and EOS Ra. The EOS R5 will become the new flagship Canon mirrorless camera, delivering exceptional image quality and video capture.”

Swift on-the-go communication abilities

With content delivery just as important as image and video capture, the EOS R5 will support automatic transfer of image files from the device to the image.canon cloud platform. This automatic image transfer makes it easy for users to view their content on other devices instantly when on-the-go. What’s more, the EOS R5 also features dual card slots for convenience.

Canon also announced the launch of the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM – the latest lens to join Canon’s RF line-up for the EOS R System. Canon is developing a total of nine RF lenses scheduled for release, including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM and compatible Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

These updates will be available free of charge from the Canon Europe support website in the future. Firmware updates for the EOS R6 are also currently in development, including the fixes found in EOS R5 version 1.1.0 firmware.
