FIFTEEN | A Capsule by Merchants
Quiet landscapes, sculptural ease
To mark fifteen years of championing contemporary African design, Merchants introduces FIFTEEN, a capsule collection that celebrates the quiet landscapes of Southern Africa. It is both a milestone and a metamorphosis: the evolution from Merchants on Long to simply Merchants, signalling a broader vision while remaining rooted in craft and discovery.
Designed by new Creative Director Tiaan Nagel, FIFTEEN is expressed through natural fibres, directional proportions, and thoughtful construction. These garments feel relaxed yet sculptural, understated yet confident. “FIFTEEN reflects the kind of clothing we believe in,” Nagel explains. “Pieces that feel considered in proportion and materiality, garments that move naturally between environments while maintaining a strong sense of form and ease.”
Crafted in a palette of neutral tones, the pieces drape naturally around the body. Hidden slits introduce movement without interrupting clarity of line; dropped armholes, elongated cuffs, and trousers engineered to sit low and relaxed create a quiet confidence.
The capsule is built around three silhouettes, each available in four colours:
Architectural shirt dress
Cocoon kaftan shift
Unisex trouser and shirt set
“Merchants has always been about presenting design that feels authentic and thoughtful,” says COO Jeanine Benjamin. “FIFTEEN felt like a natural way to mark this milestone, a collection that reflects the sensibility we have cultivated over the past fifteen years.”
With FIFTEEN, Merchants continues its exploration of contemporary African design through pieces that are understated, purposeful, and quietly confident — garments that embody the landscapes they are inspired by, and the cultural resonance they carry.
